Nokia plans to build a laptop?
Nokia is getting ready to join the laptop business. Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said in an interview, “We are looking very actively at this opportunity.” This is the first time the company has admitted to having these plans.
He goes on to say, “We don’t have to look even for five years from now to see that what we know as a cellphone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging. Today we have hundreds of millions of people who are having their first Internet experience on the phone.” Needless to say, in many parts of the world users will skip the traditional computer all together. The phone is the gateway to the global network of the future.
And activity comes from all directions. Acer, otherwise a computer company, has released eight cellphone models. They join Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo in the fight to capture this new space.
Ben Wood, research director at CCS Insight goes on to explain Nokia’s interest, “All leading mobile network operators and retailers are adding connected notebooks and netbooks to their portfolios alongside mobile phones. On this basis it comes as no surprise that Nokia is evaluating this segment.” It will be interesting to see how the two sectors come together, learning from each other and introducing new innovations from opposite histories.

Nokia builds a laptop?

What an antique antique antique laptop. Looking very nice and decent. I am waiting for this laptop and i am using dell Inspiron 1420.
Great post Ben. Goodluck in Uganda.
Nice one!
Giant problem still is the compatibility for the web browser on the phone to convert the information on websites to fit the small display screen.
I suppose this Nokia laptop will have a high degree of “wearability”, possibly opening the way for the mass production of Retinal Displays.
See you in Kampala!
